For us old timers (and fans of retro gaming) the Atari 2600 is about as close to perfect as you can get. Oh sure, the graphics sucked and the sound was off but, the gaming experience was absolutely spot on.

Well, the Atari Flashback Portable Game Player not only plays many of my old favorites from the 80’s but it lets me do it anywhere I want. Featuring a 3.2 inch (81 mm) LCD screen, this little bundle of retro gaming goodness offers up old Atari favorites such as Asteroids, Centipede, Frogger, Missile Command, and Yar’s Revenge!

There are 60 games in total (Complete Game List Here) along with a SD Card slot that you can use to play other games, all you need are the ROMs. You can google instructions on how to do that.

The screen is actually pretty good. The colors are vibrant and it’s responsive enough to look good. However, if the screen is too small for you, no worries, there’s even an A/V out port so you can play it on a TV. The only two problems with that are…

  1. The custom A/V cable is not included, but you can get it here: AV Cable.
  2. The cable output is component video so you may need an older TV or yet another adapter to convert it to HDMI.

Neither problem is insurmountable, just annoying. The built-in battery charges via the included USB cable. You get a couple of hours of play on a charge.

If you’re a fan of retro video games or just a little nostalgic for the 80’s, pick up an Atari Flashback Portable Game Player, it’s about the best $50 you can spend.
